The program includes new works, composed specially for the event by composers Yael Levy (IL/GR) and Nikos Kokolakis (GR), alongside relevant pieces by Mikis Theodorakis, Paul Ben-Haim, Tzvi Avni, ODED ZEHAVI, AND NIKA KUSHNIR, as well as the site related audiovisual installation ‘mikvah’ by Yael levy & nikos kokolakis dedicated to etz hayyim synagogue. it was organized in the framework of the synagogue Etz Hayyim’s events for the commemoration of the 80 years of the sinking of tanais ship and the loss of the jewish community of crete in 1944. The project “let them sound” was financed by the german federal foreign officen with funds of the german-greek future fund.

LET THEM SOUND IS A CONCERT DEDICATED TO HONORING THE MEMORY OF THE TRAGIC SINKING OF THE TANAIS SHIP IN JUNE 1944. THROUGH THIS CONCERT, WE PAY TRIBUTE TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF CRETE LOST IN THIS EVENT, FINDING COMFORT AND INSPIRATION IN NEW MUSICAL CREATIONS. WITH CAREFULLY SELECTED MUSIC, WE REFLECT ON AND EXPLORE THEMES OF MEMORY AND HERITAGE, EXAMINING THEM MORE ABSTRACTLY AND INTROSPECTIVELY.

PAUL BEN-HAIM’S THREE SONGS REFLECT THE VISION OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF ISRAELI ART MUSIC AS WE KNOW IT TODAY. SETTING LYRICS FROM “SONG OF SONGS” TO MUSIC WAS AN INTEGRAL PART OF CREATING A NEW CULTURE FUSING WESTERN AND MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC, WHICH IS NOW REFERRED TO AS “THE FIRST MIDDLE EASTERN SCHOOL”. THE THREE SONGS BELONG TO BEN-HAIM’S EARLY STYLE WHICH IS TONAL, MELODIC, ROMANTIC AND GENTLY RESONATING IMPRESSIONISTIC MUSIC.

MAUTHAUSEN CANTATA IS A CYCLE OF FOUR ARIAS WITH LYRICS BASED ON POEMS WRITTEN BY GREEK POET IAKOVOS KAMBANELLIS, A MAUTHAUSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP SURVIVOR, AND MUSIC WRITTEN BY GREEK COMPOSER MIKIS THEODORAKIS. IT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE “MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSICAL WORK EVER WRITTEN ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST”, AND AS “AN EXQUISITE, HAUNTING AND PASSIONATE MELODY THAT MOVES KAMBANELLIS’ AFFECTING WORDS TO AN EVEN HIGHER LEVEL”.

THE WORK “BY NIGHT ON MY BED” WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AS AN A-CAPPELLA PIECE FOR A SOLO VOICE, FOR THE WELL-KNOWN ALTO SINGER MIRA ZAKAI, WHO ALSO COMMISSIONED THE WORK. WHAT ATTRACTED ME MOST ABOUT THIS BEAUTIFUL TEXT IS THE SONIC QUALITIES EMBEDDED IN IT, MOSTLY THE FRICATIVE CONSONANTS (‘V’ SOUNDS). I WAS AMAZED BY THE BIBLICAL POET’S ABILITY TO EXPRESS THE MAIDEN’S EXCITEMENT AND LONGING TO HER BELOVED BY PROSODIC-MUSICAL DEVICES, ON TOP OF SEMANTIC ONES.
I WILL LIFT UP MINE EYES, ON THE WAY ALWAYS / TZVI AVNI (1927 IL)
TWO MOVEMENTS FROM ONE TO ONE, FIVE PIANO MINIATURES.
TZVI AVNI’S “ONE TO ONE” WAS WRITTEN FOR HAGAI YODAN. STARTING WITH JUST ONE MOVEMENT, THE COMPOSER WAS INSPIRED TO ADD FOUR MORE MOVEMENTS – ADDING ONE TO ONE TO ONE… THAT ARTISTIC PROCESS GAVE THE PIECE ITS NAME. AVNI’S STYLE HAS BEEN CHANGING AND EVOLVING THROUGHOUT THE YEARS AND HE’S STILL COMPOSING AT THE AGE OF 96! THE TWO MOVEMENTS PERFORMED IN THE CONCERT ARE MEDITATIVE AND ATMOSPHERIC – DEMONSTRATING THE PHILOSOPHICAL HEART AND MIND OF THE COMPOSER.
STONE TO STONE / YAEL LEVY (1983 IL, GR)
TEXT: YAEL LEVY. COMPOSED FOR THE MEMORIAL EVENTS FOR THE TANAIS SHIP OF 1944, CRETE.
THE PIECE “STONE TO STONE” IS INSPIRED BY THE ANCIENT JEWISH CUSTOM OF PLACING A STONE ON A GRAVE. THE CUSTOM, WHETHER PRACTICAL—TO SECURE THE GRAVE—OR SYMBOLIC—REPRESENTING CONTINUITY AND PERPETUITY, HIGHLIGHTS THE STONE’S ENDURING NATURE. UNLIKE FLOWERS, A STONE LASTS FOR GENERATIONS, SYMBOLIZING THAT THE DECEASED’S INFLUENCE REMAINS ETERNAL. IN HEBREW, “STONE” (EVEN) REFLECTS CONTINUITY THROUGH ITS INITIALS, REPRESENTING GENERATIONAL TIES. PLACING A STONE SIGNIFIES THAT THE DECEASED IS REMEMBERED. THE VICTIMS OF THE TANAIS HAVE NO GRAVE AND NO STONE, BUT THEIR MEMORY WILL REMAIN FOREVER. THIS WORK PLACES A SYMBOLIC STONE ON THEIR NON-EXISTENT GRAVE.

MARCOS ISHAKIS, BORN IN CHANIA IN 1930, POIGNANTLY CAPTURED THE BEAUTY AND PERIL OF BOAT TRAVEL IN HIS 1941 SCHOOL NOTEBOOK, VIEWING THESE JOURNEYS AS JOYFUL IN TIMES OF PEACE AND THREATENING DURING CONFLICT. NIKOS KOKOLAKIS (1981 GR) STUDIED PHYSICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CRETE, AND MUSIC COMPOSITION AT THE IONIAN UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK. HE OBTAINED A MASTER’S IN COMPOSITION AT THE ROYAL CONSERVATOIRE IN THE HAGUE WITH PETER ADRIAANSZ, YANNIS KYRIAKIDES, AND RAVIV GANCHROW WITH THE THESIS “SPATIAL AWARENESS IN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: TRANSFORMATION OF ATTENTION IN A SITUATION, BECOMING MUSICAL STRUCTURE”. CURRENTLY A PHD CANDIDATE AT THE HELLENIC MEDITERRANEAN UNIVERSITY IN CRETE, HE AIMS FOR AN ORGANIC COMBINATION OF INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSITION MUSIC, FIELD RECORDINGS, AND ELECTRONIC SOUNDS. YAEL LEVY (1983 IL) IS A COMPOSER, PERFORMER, VISUAL ARTIST, AND EDUCATOR. CURRENTLY LOCATED IN CRETE, GREECE. IN HER WORKS, SHE EXPLORES NEW MODELS THAT EMERGE FROM THE COMBINATION OF MUSIC COMPOSITION, VISUAL ART, PERFORMANCE ART, AND THEATER. THROUGHOUT HER CAREER, SHE COLLABORATED WITH DIFFERENT ENSEMBLES AND INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS AND PERFORMED HER WORKS IN VARIOUS VENUES AND FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD INCLUDING GAUDEAMUS MUZIEKWEEK IN UTRECHT, HOLLAND FESTIVAL IN AMSTERDAM, DAG IN DE BRANDING FESTIVAL IN THE HAGUE, LIVING MUSEUM PROJECT IN NICOSIA, SOUND 59 – CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL IN PERM, RUSSIA, AN EVENING OF TODAY, MUZIEKGEBOUW AMSTERDAM, MANIFESTA 12 COLLATERAL EVENTS IN PALERMO, INTERFACES EUC RESIDENCY IN NICOSIA, VOX FAMINA IN TEL AVIV, ANICHTA PANIA IN CHANIA AND MORE. HER WORKS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED BY VARIOUS ENSEMBLES SUCH AS ENSEMBLE MAZE, NIEUW ENSEMBLE, ENSEMBLE MODELO62, THE NORTHERN CONSORT, KAMERKOOR DUALIS, KLUSTER5, CATCHPENNY ENSEMBLE AND OTHERS. SHE STUDIED COMPOSITION IN ISRAEL WITH DR. HAGAR KADIMA BETWEEN 2007 AND 2011 AND COMPLETED A BA IN MUSIC EDUCATION AND CHOIR CONDUCTING AT THE LEVINSKY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, TEL AVIV. SUBSEQUENTLY, SHE OBTAINED A BA IN COMPOSITION, WITH GILIUS VAN BERGEIJK AND YANNIS KYRIAKIDES AND AN MA IN MUSIC COMPOSITION AS WELL WITH YANNIS KYRIAKIDES AND JUSTIN BENNETT AT THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY IN THE HAGUE (2011-2016). LEVY IS ACTIVE IN SEVERAL CREATIVE GROUPS WHICH SHE CO-FOUNDED WITH HER COLLEAGUES, INCLUDING A COMPOSER-PERFORMER DUO WITH THE COMPOSER NIKOS KOKOLAKIS, CATCHPENNY ENSEMBLE, WHICH FOCUSES ON MULTIMEDIA WORKS AND COLLECTIVE COMPOSITION AND TA-TA-TONE – CONCERTS AND WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN.
