Nikos Kokolakis (1981 GR)

Nikos Kokolakis is a composer based in Crete. He studied Physics at the University of Crete and Music Composition at the Ionian University, the University of York, and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, with Peter Adriaansz, Yannis Kyriakides, and Raviv Ganchrow with the Thesis “Spatial awareness in instrumental music: Transformation of attention in a situation, becoming musical structure“.

Combining conceptual ideas with mathematical models and multidisciplinary methods, he co-founded the Catchpenny Ensemble and served as its artistic director from 2015 to 2021.

His pieces have been performed at Gaudeamus, Orgelpark Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, and other major festivals. He received first prize at TROMP International Percussion Competition (Stream for Marimba), second prize at the International Carillon Composition Contest in Zwolle (Squarcle for Carillon), while Bagatelles for Carillon was chosen to be performed at the Carillon of Doesburg on the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Carillon Society.
